About Louis Schwizgebel:
Born in Geneva in 1987, Swiss-Chinese pianist Louis Schwizgebel has been described as “a pianist with a profound gift” by the Guardian (August 2013) and an “insightful musician” by the New York Times (May 2013). Aged seventeen, he won the Geneva International Music Competition and, two years later, the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. In 2012 he won second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition and in 2013 he was announced as a BBC New Generation Artist for 2013 to 2015.
Schwizgebel has already played with many major orchestras across the globe in some of the finest concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Royal Albert Hall, Tonhalle Zürich, Musikverein and Konzerthaus Vienna, KKL Lucerne, Mozarteum Salzburg, Smetana Hall Prague and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. Orchestras include the London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Wiener Symphoniker, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Philharmonia Zurich, Orchestre National de Lyon, Detroit Symphony, Nagoya and Shanghai Philharmonic orchestras, the chamber orchestras of Zürich, Lausanne and Geneva, and New York’s Orchestra of St. Luke's. Conductors with whom he performs include Charles Dutoit, Fabio Luisi, Marek Janowski, Leonard Slatkin, Louis Langrée, Alondra de la Parra, Thierry Fischer, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Fabian Gabel, Joshua Weilerstein and Vasily Petrenko.
In 2013 Schwizgebel was one of five pianists invited to perform a Beethoven concerto at the Verbier Festival, and he also performed a solo recital at the City of London Festival. Other festival appearances include Bergen International Festival, Progetto Martha Argerich, Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Festival Septembre Musical de Montreux-Vevey, Midem Cannes Festival and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In recital Schwizgebel plays in halls such as London’s Wigmore Hall, Munich’s Herkulessaal and at venues across Switzerland including KKL Lucerne.
Schwizgebel records for Aparté and his first solo disc, Poems, which features works by Ravel, Liszt, Holliger and Schubert was released in 2013, and received four stars and an enthusiastic review from Germany’s Fono Forum.
Schwizgebel studied with Brigitte Meyer in Lausanne and Pascal Devoyon in Berlin, and then later at the Juilliard School with Emanuel Ax and Robert McDonald, and at London’s Royal Academy of Music with Pascal Nemirovski.
