Information:
Teatru Manoel was built in 1731. It was commissioned and personally funded by António Manoel de Vilhena, Grand Master of the Knights of Malta. The first ever performance was Scipione Maffei’s La Merope on the 19th January 1732.
It is one of the finest examples of baroque architecture and one of the oldest working theatres in the World. As Malta’s national theatre, the Manoel, as it is affectionately referred to by locals, is one of the major contributors to the development of the local cultural scene.
