About Ristorante Sikania

Ristorante Sikania is a reasonably priced Italian restaurant situated along Spinola Bay, a great location where you will be able to enjoy an informal meal – perhaps on the terrace – as you take in the unique view of St. Julians Bay.

The menu is simple and quite naturally Sicilian and the service is well-mannered and unobtrusive.

You may enter through the door on the road behind the restaurant. This belies the size of the restaurant and its terrace. Then, take the lift or the spiral staircase.

The restaurant is neat and very brightly lit, with Italian music in the background. The dining area is a great place to be in. Tables are well spaced out, the walls are lined with wine bottles, and the open kitchen is a reassuring touch. The main courses – well priced, mostly hovering under the €15 mark – are quite straightforward, with typical Mediterranean dishes, the occasional Italian speciality like cacciucco and a section dedicated to pizza.

The antipasti include the insalata di mare – a typical tavola fredda style salad, with squid, octopus and cuttlefish that have been pickled and served cold. Served with a green salad and tomatoes, this antipasto is a tangy and simple way to work up an appetite. You may perhaps prefer to go for the pepata di cozze. This is served in a bowl of hot pepata broth, the mussels are juicy treats of salty goodness, served with slices of toasted Maltese bread that will help you to get at the delicious liquid. The main course could be linguine allo scoglio – cooked al dente, or a pizza siciliana – quite an imposing packet of flavour where anchovies, olives and capers join forces to make every bite a force to be reckoned with. The pizza dough is light and dry, the toppings are well dosed. You may also opt for grilled calamari and much more. The grilled squid has tender flesh, and the charred skin adds a lovely flavour to the mild-mannered cephalopod, with the simple dressing of olive oil balancing out the dish.

Amongst the choice of wines, there’s the Regaleali by Tasca d’Almerita – a white from Sicily made of three indigenous varieties. It is the sort of cheap-and-cheerful white from Sicily that is youthful, refreshing and entirely forgettable… just what you may need for a relaxing evening.
The ideal way to end your meal is by having a shot of bitter liqueur, or a ‘homemade’ limoncello.
